It makes up the eastern two-thirds of the Hispaniola island,discovered by Columbus in its first trip,when the first European colony of the New World was established. Dominican Republic has a humid subtropical climate that is alleviated by its altitude.Seaside thermals and trade winds from the north-east provide relief from the heat and blow almost permanently,giving Tayrona's Bay Wind Resort its name.The average annual temperature is 80 F (27 C) and the water temperature fluctuates between 20 and 25 C. Dominican Republic is becoming one of the hottest tourist destinations in the Caribbean with over 3 million visitors and a very rapidly growing hotel industry: over 10% annually.It boasts over 300 miles (482 km) of beautiful beaches and several important cities and smaller towns with good tourism infrastructure, with a total population of over 8 million inhabitants, and 7 international airports,serviced by major airlines. The North Coast extends for about 125 miles (200 km
) from Puerto Plata in the west to Samana in the east and boasts
some of the finest beaches in Dominican Republic, where several
fist class hotels and resorts have been developed. It represents over 50% of the tourist arrivals and
rooms in the country with over 70% occupancy during the last five
years.Playa Dorada at the east near Puerto Plata is the largest
hotels concentration in D.R with excellent infrastructure including
a fine golf course,and very near Sosua and Cabarete, known as the
"windsurfing paradise" where all water sports including
kite surfing and scuba diving lure thousands of sport tourists from
Europe, USA,and Canada every year.
